What is BTC?
In 2008, an anonymous creator known as Satoshi Nakamoto introduced BTC, the world’s first decentralized cryptocurrency, through a whitepaper that outlined a new kind of money, the one that didn’t rely on banks or governments. The system officially launched in 2009, powered by a peer-to-peer (P2P) network where users could send value directly to each other. The total supply is 21 million coins. This built-in scarcity is one reason many see BTC as digital gold.
At the heart of BTC is the blockchain — a transparent digital ledger that records every transaction ever made. These records are grouped into blocks and secured through a process called Proof of Work (PoW), where miners use computing power to confirm transactions and protect the network through mining.
To use BTC, people store their coins in wallets that hold private keys and generate addresses for sending and receiving funds. The system’s rules are enforced by independent nodes that verify all activity, making the network open, censorship-resistant, and highly secure.
Today, BTC is used worldwide, from major companies like Microsoft to small local shops, as both a payment method and a store of value. Its success sparked thousands of other digital currencies, but BTC remains the original and most influential cryptocurrency, symbolizing financial independence.
